Steve Popper feels it necessary to apologize for his joke. I thought it
was very witty of him and did not need all the prompting provided by the
:-) symbol currently so very ubiquitous in order to understand it. To
do so is the equivalent of having to explain a joke.

Steve the ones who missed the joke should be apologizing to you. Sometimes
clarinet players are so square. I once made an assertion that the opera,
"The Magic Flute" would have been a far better piece if it were called
"The Magic Bass Clarinet" only to get chewed out by a clarinet player who
felt it necessary to tell me that the bass clarinet was not invented at
that time. When clarinet players get very good at playing, the sinus
caveties get so squeezed that it destroys the sense of humor.

The piano reduction of the Brahms clarinet concerto is a very, very funny
remark and an extremely clever insight. It deserves praise. I give it
such now.
