Two questions in this mail...

1) What differences are there between the top-line Selmer and Yamaha
low C bass clarinets? I really like the Selmer I'm playing
now, but I notice Yamaha offers a "first-time buyers" program,
which would help me quite a bit in being able to afford my
very own bass.

2) I'm directing the St. Olaf Clarinet Choir this coming year
(YAY!!!!!) and am always on the lookout for a) new pieces, or b)
existing works that would lend themselves well to being
arranged/orchestrated for clarinet choir. I have already arranged the
Bach "Little" Fugue, am almost done transcribing the overture to
Verdi's "La Forza del Destino", and am working on "Elsa's Procession
to the Cathedral" by Wagner. I'm thinking that the Barbar Adagio for
Strings might work well, and Bach preludes, fugues, and anything from
the WTC are good stuff. Past that point, I'm stuck. I'm also kinda
clueless to what's new as far as pieces written specifically for
clarinet choir. I think our library's newest cl. choir-specific piece
is the Frackenpohl Prelude and Allegro, which we read this past year
and I did like it. BTW, our instrumentation will probably be
something like one Eb, one (maybe 2) first Bb, 2-3 second Bb, 3
thirds, 2 basset horns, 2-3 basses, and an Eb contra (sorry, guys, but
they'll have to pry Torden, my Bb contra, out of my dead stiff hands
if anyone else even DREAMS of playing him!).

As always, suggestions are DEEPLY appreciated. Maybe the readers
returning from ClarinetFest will have some new pieces in mind!

--Andrea, Bb bass clarinetist extraordinaire!!!
...now that I'm done with composition (and got an A!), I can
get back to arranging =)
