I've been off the list for awhile, so someone set me straight
if this idea is already off the ground.

I've recently had some fun with the program Finale, which allows
the user to input musical scores and transpose them to his/her
liking (and to produce stunningly beautiful output on laser
printers, as well as to create and store MIDI files).
Four of Mozart's five divertimenti for basset horn trio show the
third part in bass clef. I have recently input and transposed
the third part of three of them to Bb clarinet.

It occurs to me that since the copyright on music of dead guys
(a local radio station has a billboard which says "Less music
by dead guys!") is only on the plates themselves (the presentation
produced by the publisher), the intellectual product, the music,
is in the public domain. In addition to Finale, there is now
a program which scans clean manuscripts and produces MIDI files.

Has anyone on this list raised the possibility of starting an
anonymous ftp site of public domain MIDI files of clarinet music?
If a site is needed, I'll offer my subdirectory here (nerdinfo).

Oliver
