It sounds like an octavin from the description. There are two in the collection
of the Horniman Museum in South London (previously promoted by me on this list,
without ANY remuneration ...). I think there is info on this thing in the Grove
Dictionary of Musical Instruments. Of course, it could be something even more
esoteric.
