Whether to play a piece on an "authentic" instrument (or the
closest approximation you can get) depends on whether you are
playing as an artist or as a music historian.
As a historian, of course!
But if you, as an artist, think that a clarinet concerto
sounds best when played on a kazoo, then go ahead. (But the
audience and the other musicians might have a different artistic
opinion than you.)
