"What do the others [i.e. C clarinets] use [for mouthpieces]?" asks Cary Karp.
Well, I dunno. Buffet & Selmer Cs appear here in catalogues with entries
saying "P[rice] O[n] A[pplication]" or "Available to firm order only," so I
haven't met anyone who played on one. I've always taken the "received wisdom"
on this to be that you can make a mouthpiece which suits both a B flat and an A
, or one that
suits a B flat and a C, but not one that works well on all three instruments -
hence, I presume, the plunge in popularity of the C from the mid-nineteenth
century onwards.
