Subj: A Question of What Stravinsky Objected To
Date: Sat, 2 Jul 1994 22:45:34 -0400

I told the story of Stravinksy chewing out a clarinet player for doing
all 3 unaccompanied pieces on a single clarinet and not changing
instruments as the composer requested.

A question was asked: did the clarinet player simply transpose the part
so that it was in the right key (if that word is logical with these
works)? The answer is NO.

The player simply played the written notes on the clarinet that he
had in his hands, and that happened to be a B-flat instrument. So
Stravinsky appeared to have two problems: (1) the notes being sounded
were not the notes that Stravinsky called for; i.e., the piece
was in the wrong key. And, second, the character of sound was different
^^^ ^^ ^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^
than what he expected, presuming his ear was that good.
