And Tim, I'll tell you another thing you can do with your full Boehm
clarinet that you cannot do with a plain Boehm. You can get a low D on
it! I do it on mine all the time.
I had a piece made (dimensions on request) that fits between the lower
joint and the bell. It lengthens the clarinet by about 1 inch (though you
have to be more precise than this.) I had it made out of maple.
When it is inserted, I can no longer play low E-flat, but get a low D
instead. I use it for the fragmentary Mozart clarinet quintet, K. 516c
that has been completed by Robert Levin. And it requires the low D (proof
that Stadler's basset clarinet was also in B-flat as well as one in A).
I also use the piece on my full Boehm A clarinet but it serves no purpose
there. I dont have any pieces that require the note. The Mozart quintet
needs a low C, not a low D.
