Oh yes, I agree: most metal clarinets are dogs! I took on someone's
metal B-flat, a Regent (Ohio Band Instrument Company) to learn re-padding
on. It looks lovely - once polished (it was a brownish black) it gleams
something amazing! But it plays... well, it's pretty sorry! And I gather
that's the rule and not the exception!
But my two metals are very fine professional quality horns. Frankly, I
was rather shocked to discover they existed! The Cundy-Bettoney E-flat
with "U S" stamped on it really puzzles me, as I know none of their other
instruments, and this one's an utter sweetheart: amazingly in tune with
itself (frankly, better than my Selmer B-flat), and with a beautiful (and
LOUD) tone.
