Clark:
1897-8 MUST be way too early. The instrument seems to play perfectly well at A=
ca. 440, though it's a bit fussy about mouthpieces; it definitely played sharp
with the mouthpiece which was on when I bought it - a VanDoren specimen ( I
don't remember the model number), which was slightly chipped anyway, so I soon
retired it. Did Buffet[-Crampon] descend (?!) to the practice of making
instruments for particular sales outlets? (One would expect such an instrument
not to carry their name, of course). What happened to Buffet during the Second
World War? This is the period when my repairman thinks the instrument may have
been made - possibly slightly before or after, I presume.
Roger Shilcock
P.S. The instrument seems to have a fairly narrow bore, but wider than one
would expect in an instrument intended for the French market.
