I, too, was deeply saddened by the passing of Jerry Pierce. His column
in the Clarinet was always the first thing I read each month. I met Jerry
only once (at the Flagstaff conference), but his kindness to my wife and I
will be remembered fondly. Jerry seemed like an old friend I had known for
years.
Lynette and I enjoy playing the duets by Brepsant, which were originally
published by Cundy-Bettony in three sets of five duets. I mentioned to Jerry
that I had a copy of the second set of these duets, and he graciously offered
to send my copies of the other two sets.
Within days of arriving home from Flagstaff, a large envelope containing
the Brepsant Duets arrived from Jerry. In his note, Jerry apologized for
taking so long (one week!), but that he had to drive some 25 miles to a
photocopy shop that could do large pages. In response, I sent Jerry a check
for what I figured it had cost him, but Jerry promptly returned it, saying
"that's what friends are for".
Jerry. if there is a Heaven, I'm sure your there, playing with the
ultimate clarinet choir on a perfect reed! We will miss you!
