I once heard on the radio a recording of James Galway playing a
flute transcription of Mozart's Clarinet Conerto. First of all, the key
was changed (to G), then of course the melodic material needed serious
restructuring to fit the flute's limited range (compared to the
clarinet)(as if it weren't bad enough that it wasn't being played on a
basset clarinet!). It was bizarre, and did Mozart no favors whatsoever!

On the other hand, I more recently heard Rampal's recording of
Khatchaturian's Violin Concerto transcribed for flute. I confess
unfamiliarity with the violin version. However, the transcription
resulted from Rampal's request for a flute concerto from Khatchaturian,
to which the composer's response was "why not just transcribe my violin
concerto?" The result was idiomatic and beautiful, so obviously all
parties concerned knew what they were doing!
