Dan,

I've had a question about the Gran Partita for some time, saving it
for presentation to an informed authority on the subject, which I
believe you to be. I have heard a flute quartet (flute and strings) on a
number of occasions containing tunes from part of the Gran Partita
(possibly the theme and variations). I am told that the flute piece
predated the Gran Partita. Are you familiar with the flute piece, and
can you tell me if it did precede the Gran Partita, and if Mozart
borrowed one of the two from the earlier work?

I performed the Gran Partita about two and a half years ago, and
remember the basset-horn issue as being so important as to propose
dropping the piece from the program if we couldn't obtain the basset
horns. At the time, it seemed as though one of our major
accomplishments was the horse trading we went through to be able to
borrow the instruments. We were able to borrow the basset horns, and
after the concert, everyone agreed it worth the trouble.
