I use both the akai and yamaha (WX&) sorry wx7 wind controllers. and I have
played both in concert many times. The akai comes from the instrument
designed by N. Steiner (electronic valved instrument). I first saw this
in the 70s in the works of V. Ussachevsky. Vlamidir Ussachevsky wrote
"the pieces for cl and electronic valved instrument" for me and I plaed (sorry)
played them many times. They since have been played by others and recorded
by f. Gerard Errante. Or course, this was an analog instument that had
the sound of a sawtooth wave. Today it is MIDI and can have any sound.
I preefer the Yamaha instrument. Each has multiple octave keys. this
isn't the problem with these instruments. We tend to play our acoustic
instruments in such a way that I fingers are a bith ahead of our tongue.
this will not work with wind controllers and produces noticable audio glitches.
I prefer the pitch-to-MIDI concerter. This allows me to use my
acoustic clarinet. The pmc converts the acoustic cl sound to MIDI code
to drive any voice module that I mgi might have in my collection.
I use the IVL with footcontroller (includes harmonizer) but this is no longer
made. Roland does make one but without the harmonizer (and other bells
and whistles). Problem with these is of course acu accurate trackig (you hear
the cl and the elec sound. With the wind controllers you hear just
the elec sound). they can be more than accurat enough. Also, at the lower
end of the cl there is a noticable delay.
I have recorded a compact disc with clarinnetist f. Gerard Errante using
the yamaha wind controller (Gerry did the Ussachevsky pieces mentione d
earlier) and other works for electric clarinet (acoustic cl using the
pitch-to-MIDI converter). This is Capstone 8607 available from Albany
Records (1 800 752-1951) "Electric clarinet". I amaso also
working on a new electric clarinet compact disc VELVET GLACIERS for
electric cl and poetry that will be out next year. I
would be glad to help anyone interested in windcontrollers or the
pitch-to-midi converters.
