I recently saw a performance by a Brazilian Jazz band in which one of the
performers used an electronic wind instrument that I couldn't figure out.
It had a mouthpiece, rectangular barrel about a foot and a half long, and
a cylindrical piece at its base. It appeared to have three keys on the
rectangular part, and the player also rotated the cylinder, I suppose to
make register changes. It did not sound like a wind instrument at all, but
sort of like an electric organ.
Can anyone figure out what I'm talking about? It was silver in color
and I think the name Akai was on it. I was just reminded of this by Myron
Bennett's description of the Akai EWI, but since it wasn't fingered anything
like a saxophone I don't think we're talking about the same thing.
