There is a fragmentary quintet for clarinet and strings of Mozart, K. 516c
that I always wanted to play but it required descent to low D so I never
did much with it (though it is published in a wonderful completion of
Bob Levin). Anyway, one day I took my full Boehm clarinet to a woodworker
and told him that I wanted a piece to connect the bell to the lower joint.
The piece had to be about 1-1/2 inches long and that he would have to cut
it to make it shorter under certain circumstances.

Well he made it and I put one end in the lower joint and the bell on the
other end, fingered low E-flat (it was a full Boehm system so it had the low
note) and out came a beautiful D. It also works on the A full Boehm I have.

Of course, when I have the insert installed, I can't use the low E-flat,
but who can argue?
