I suspect the worlds in which we move are particularly different in the matter
of what sorts of instruments we encounter. As I mix mainly with amateur (some
VERY amateur) players, I tend to find that other people's clarinets differ from
my specimens principally in having different things wrong with them. Most
amateur players (in the U.K., at least) have fairly poor quality instruments,
and do not have the incentive to keep them in a perfect state of repair - or
the money, sometimes. All these reasons may contribute to the impression that I
don't get the same tone out of other player's instruments, though there are
probably
elements in common, and other players I am acquainted with don't seem to have
this experience either.
