Roger Shilcock writes, in response to a recent post of mine...

I answer, I offer a paraphrase of a comment recently made by Clark Fobes, who
said...
As a minimum, a mouthpiece should allow you to do what you want.
Clark, I couldn't agree more. This places the responsibility of sounding
good on the player, not the mouthpiece. Roger, I feel the same criteria
would apply to the selection of an instrument. Does the instrument respond
to you as a player such that you can achieve what you wish to achieve? Is it
flexible? Is it reasonably in tune? Those questions would be among the items I
would consider if I ever were to purchase a new instrument. (In case you're
wondering, I've been playing on the same set of clarinets for the past twenty
years... I still like them, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT HORNS CAN BE "BLOWN OUT"--that
is, I do not believe that horns deteriorate in general performance quality as
the years pass (but let's not have this discussion again!)).
Roger, how about you... what do you look for in a new instrument?
S Geidel
