Dan,

I certainly hope you meant 6 clarinets and not 6 clarinetists when doing
Mahler 5!

In most major orchestras, there are contractually defined specifications for
what constitutes "doubling".....In my orchestra (Detroit Symphony Orchestra),
doubling for a clarinetist would occur if Clarinet I or II played anything
other than "clarinet" (C, Bb, A)--this included Eb clar for those positions.
As the Eb clarinetist, I only receive doubling if I were to play bass and
our bass player would receive doubling if he were to play Eb (as in Mahler 1,
for instance). Basset horn is doubling for all of us, as would any other
instrument in existence (yes, including ocarina!).

Pay for doubling here is $58.75 for one concert, $117.50 for two or more
concerts (in other words, for a week of work!) or $23.50 for a rehearsal.
The larger amount given would be in lieu of any other payments and is in
addition to the weekly salary. All figures are flat fees listed in our
contract.

Of course, various local unions have their own wage scales, doubling, etc.,
but our contract supersedes that, as would the contract of any major
orchestra.
