Another option is to contact the Woodwind & Brasswind and see what they
have in the way of used clarinets. Typically, they sell Buffet R-13's that
they have completely reconditioned for $500-600. I recently purchased
a Buffet R-13-A that was completely overhauled, in excellent shape that
I'm quite happy with (now that I've worked out the right mouth piece!)
for $695. The only drawback is you usually have to wait for the right
instrument to arrive, but you might get lucky. Also, they have a policy
on all of their instruments that you can try and return if you don't like.
