Dawn, judging from your description, I am surprised that the thing
plays at all. It has obviously been a mishandled bass clarinet that
is quite out of whack. It has not had any servicing for at least a
year. People put it on the floor, though drop it on the floor is probably
a better description.

You are wise to get rid of it and play another instrument. But I must
disagree with your assessment that this is a problem caused by the
introduction of some new-fangled technology onto a stable base. The
low C b.c. has been around since at least 1955. I bought mine in 1962.
They play magnificently. There is nothing new fangled about them. The
only complication that they are personally responsible for are the long
rods. But plain, ordinary, vanilla b.c.s play just as badly as the
low C models when they are out of registration too.
