Cary Karp's note about his Buffet E-flat reports a conversation that
he had with his local Buffet representative about the technical
rationale behind the two pieces of the main section of the instrument.
I don't know what it is that scratches me the wrong way with that
story, Cary, but the fact that the instrument is stored in a
traditional fashion (i.e., in one piece) leaves that explanation that
was given to you ringing hollow in my ears.
For example, as a player why would I care one whit about having an
access point in the middle of the horn so as to enable precise
measurement? I might measure it once if I had nothing better to do
but to have the instrument in two pieces permanently for that
purpose doesn't make sense.
And if Buffet makes use of this additional access point for
measuring during the manufacturing process (which is probably a good
idea), they could very well then permanently join the two pieces
prior to shipment. The fact that you indicate that the middle
tenon is sufficiently delicate that it is not going to take all
that knocking around makes this strange story even stranger.
This one sounds to me as if Buffet made a technical mistake in
devising such a scheme and has now searched for a good reason
to do it, retroactively. Thus the story about having access to
another measuring place.
Strange.
