A friend who plays the oboe mentioned to me that there is a plastic
oboe (or ebonite or something, but you get the idea) that's carefully
crafted and has a pretty decent sound. They take time to make it,
so that its cost is nearly that (or just above that) of a wooden
oboe.

There are certain situations where a non-wood instrument would be
handy to have. But not a cheapo one that sounds like a cat in heat....
