Subj: String ligatures?

OK, with all the discussion of ligatures and even an oblique mention of string
ligatures I'd like to know how one makes/applies/ties/uses a string ligature.
Do you need the grooves I've seen on some German mouthpieces?

Since string ligatures were the orignal method, something like the Rovner
seems to approximate the fairly wide, uniform pressure around the ring
formed by mouthpiece and reed reasonably well. But do I want something
like the original, or have things gotten much better? I've been told that
proficient users of string can make adjustments or change reeds quite
quickly. Comments?

I'd like to experiment with one if I don't have to have a mpc scored to keep
the strings in place.
