Having discussed reeds extensivelyin the past few weeks, I guess
our choices are to broaden our scope to mouthpieces, barrels, or
ligatures. Ligatures are "closest" to the reed (well, debatable
with mouthpieces...) so this seems the natural choice :) :) :)

Actually, my faithful two-screw plastic ligature (the standard
type, if there is such a thing) was stepped on by an elephant-footed
oboist a second after I carelessly dropped it. So I switched to
well-used metal backup, but it seemsto prevent fast tongueing
response of most reeds. In any case, my local repairman carries the
standard plastic ligature as well as a Rovner ligature I've never
seen before: it's essentially a wide strip of plasticized
fabric (patent-leather-like firmness) which loosely holds the reed
and is tightened on the top of the mouthpiece with a massive single
screw.

I got this thing on loan for a week....after 30mins first
experimentation this morning, it seems to produce a darker tone
than what I had before, though reeds behave as if they were
softer. Doesn't slip off the mouthpiece easily.

Has anyone tried this ligature (or use it). Any comments.
It seems a bit pricey at $17 for a stip of fabric....

Martin
