Wouldn't Mahler have expected German-type bass clarinets? This sabotages your
"authenticity" point, as the sound of a German bass clarinet is very different;
I don't suppose that has changed a lot since his time.
No doubt Bayreuth has had A basses, but I was hoping if someone knew what clef
appears on the parts they actually play.
