I've played bass in Mahler 4 myself, and I seem to remember the passage in
question as being quite easy to transpose .... unless it's that passage in
fairly small notes not long after the start of movement 1, which is a swine to
transpose. Thank you for the explanation. Incidentally, do you know whether
it's true that Wagner's bass parts at Bayreuth are all in pristine condition,
since some early player(s) transposed them all into the treble clef so that
people could actually play them?
