I had the great pleasure of working with jazz great Gary Foster yesterday.
He was here to buy mouthpieces, but we had a wonderful discussion over
the threee hours he was here about, what else, the clarinet.
I had not known that his primary training as a musician is as a classical
clarinetist. Due to the voluminous amount of recording he has done on the
saxophone his virtuousity as a clarinetist may not be known outside of
Los Angeles.
Fortunately, an interesting new album has been released that features
Gary on both saxophone and clarinet. The title is:
"White Heat/ Film Noir" released by Discovery records.
This album features arrangements of themes from classic film noir movies.
The tunes are short, only 3.30 - 5. min long. But each is a gem and the
sum of the cuts makes for a great "dinner jazz or late night listening.
I found this in the Soundtracks section of the record store.
If you live in northern California, Gary will be interviewed on KJAZ
(FM 92.7) wednesday at 9:00 AM.
