Bozza, for all his faults, wrote some terrific tunes. While his batting
average may not have been very high, for a non-genius, he did quite well
for himself. His 12 Etudes on Carnatic Modes are stunning (if imposing)
works. The clarinet Concerto has (in my opinion) some charm and
brilliance. For wind quintet, The Variations on a Free Theme, while
marred by
a slightly cheesey ending, is an effective 1st half closer. He also
wrote some beautiful Clarinet/Bassoon duets and a terrific trio for 3
bassoons. All of these, oddly enough, show a remarkable restraint, where
chromatic scales are concerned.
