Subj: Need help in deciphering mouthpiece specifications

First of all, thank you to everyone on the list for helpful, interesting
comments. I am getting back into playing after several years of not
doing much, and find the list invaluable in returning me to the world of
clarinets. I studied with George Silfies (St.Louis Symphony) and got
a bachelor's degree in performance at the North Carolina School of the
Arts (studied with Robert Listokin) Now I realize that I never paid
much attention to mouthpieces--just used what they told me to. I am
beginning to look around to see if I can find a better one.

I have a catalog that lists a lot of different brands. I'm not sure
I understand the implications of the different specs.

The facings seem to run from about 42 to 46. Why would one choose a
longer or shorter one? Is there a norm?

Several models are labelled "symphonic?" Anyone know what that means?

Some are labelled medium, medium close, and others have little letters
like "o, m, mm," etc.

I obtained this info. from a catalog from the Woodwind & the Brasswind.

I also noticed that a Pyne mouthpiece is VERY expensive. Are they worth
it?

I plan on ordering several to try, of course, but feel pretty ignorant
going into this.

I would welcome comments from anyone on this. I use a Harrison ligature
and V12 reeds, if anyone knows what impact that might have on things.

Thank you. By the way, does anyone know who is principal in St. Louis
now? I assume Mr. Silfies has retired by now, but I don't know that
for a fact.
