Dan Leeson has underlined my point - up to a point. Poulenc and Hindemith can
be presumed to have had (ugh again) some particular sound in mind - and their
cases, one might think the reedy, "school of Cahuzac" French tone to be
something like what Poulence had in mind, and something rather different to be
what Hindemith had in mind for the Concerto and Sonata. Any one who has heard
the old Bernard Walton recording of the HIndemith concerto would (I think)
find his not quite "German" but certainly un-French and un-American tone entire
ly appropriate for this work, for instance. I don't think my ideas are
well-formed enough to go on at present - and I'd better start work, too .....
