I am off to teach a calculus class in 5 minutes, but I wanted to
mention before taking off that Goodman's band, when it was in
the Paramount theatre in NY, used to play a set of about 1 hour. It
always opened with the band rising from the pit playing "Let's
Dance" and it always closed with the signature tune that we have
been talking about as the band was lowered back into the pit again.

Almost every band had such an opening and closing tune. If such
groups were also on the radio, they did the same thing there, but
the origin of the practice came about from the days of the touring
band.
