I have been busy with juries and final week so have gotten way behind on
reading the postings. I am very interested in the discussion of materials,
barrel joints, etc. If I may quickly add my two-cents worth (comments):
I have played on delrin insert barrels for several years with one set of
clarinets which I play now and again. They have worked very well and have
(IMO) remained consistent. I also have all wood barrels for this set and
I do "feel" a difference. I also have several barrels made by Lee Springer
from student (mine) days at Northwestern--these are made of rubber (I think)
like the mouthpiece stock. The latest Springers I have were made from

delrin stock. He was into this material a few years before his death.

It is my understanding that the more expensive Loree oboe has as its
upper-joint delrin and not wood (on special order from France). I really
would like to get into this more but must run to the next round of full-
faculty juries. More later. Ron Monsen
