Steve Popper makes an interesting point about alternate materials and
their uses.

I have brought up graphite as a possible suitable material because I believe
although I am not certain, that it can be machined similarly too wood and
thus would be an economical alternative to wood. My thinking is that
makers will be resistant enough to change and if a material could be
provided that would require the least possible reconfiguring of tools
then they might consider this new material.

Another reason that I have suggested the use of graphite is that my lay
understanding is that molecularly it "grows" in strands similar to wood fibre
which gives it great elasticity. Is this true? I am currently trying to
find a supplier of graphite so that I can experiment with it as a
material for barrels and bells. (Bells are my next project!!!!)

Also, why not find a new lighter weight material for keys? The 21st century
is upon us. It certainly seems time to explore new possibilities for
clarinet materials.
