In response to your statement about pianos and tone quality,
you are exactly right> I am a college student and study both
clarinet and piano. I hadn't known about the different tunings on the
piano for different tones, but I do know that the way the piano keys are
struck greatly affects the way the instrument sounds.
The first thing that my piano teacher here (melody lord... sub for
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) did was to teach me the proper
technique for using the natural arm weight instead of muscle
power to produce a sound, and I don't really know why, but my tone
became so much darker and fuller. If I am not mistaken (and I very
well could be), the Russian school, among others , is more concerned
with a full and dark tone than say, the American school of playing.
There really is alot more to say to this issue and it is very
interesting, but I really don't know enough to say any more.
Thanks for the topic and info.
