Talking about barrels, does anyone have any experience of the slotted
barrels that Vandoren were pushing a few years ago? They were like
normal barrels except that they had about ten slots machined out of
the outside so that in profile, they looked like a double edged comb.

The Vandoren rep said that the aim was to cool the air as it passed
through the barrel and hence condense out some of the moisture before
it got near the holes. (I'm not quite sure what was supposed to happen
to the moisture after it condensed in the barrel. Run down in a
trickle to the G# hole I expect:-) .)
