-->I remember seeing a reprint of an article from The Clarinet when I was in
-->college (ca. 1978 - although the article might have been several years
-->older) in which the authors presented a study of reed vibrations and
-->physics. Some of the issues raised in the recent query were covered, and
-->interestingly, the authors found that a slight "trench" cut along the
-->top of the reed at the point at which the mouthpiece curve breaks was
-->as, if not more effective, than different types of traditional scrapings.

I've got a box of tenor sax reeds that actually have a hole reamed in the
reed at that point (doesn't go all the way thru). I forget the brand since
I just got them and have only used them once, but with my horn & mouthpiece
I found them a bit thin sounding.

I used to have some old sax reeds with grooves cut in them. Vibra something?
