I remember seeing a reprint of an article from The Clarinet when I was in
college (ca. 1978 - although the article might have been several years
older) in which the authors presented a study of reed vibrations and
physics. Some of the issues raised in the recent query were covered, and
interestingly, the authors found that a slight "trench" cut along the
top of the reed at the point at which the mouthpiece curve breaks was
as, if not more effective, than different types of traditional scrapings.
