Dear John Webster, etc.
The late great Ted Planas gave a talk once to the Clarinet & Saxophone Society
on Buffet's manufacturing secrets, in which he mentioned that Buffet clarinets
are all impregnated with oil under pressure, and so are "pre-oiled" by the
time a player gets at them. Subsequent oiling can only have minimal impact. The
best precautions against cracks are avoiding sudden temperature and humidity
changes, as previously discussed on this list.
