Obviously, Artie Shaw's version is THE one (although it has been recorded by
several others). Shaw's Victor version (originally a 12" '78 & over 9 min.
long) is his best recording of it; a 2-min. version of Shaw playing it
can be seen in the Fred Astaire movie "Second Chorus" (widely available as
a cheap video); apparently a more complete (c. 5-min.) version was made for
the movie but obviously was radically edited. Collector Ken Crawford said he
thought he had a copy unedited, but has not gotten back to me. Anyway, the
Victor version is available on several CD reissues - not sure which has the
best fidelity. That's all that has surfaced of Shaw doing it - not even an
alternate take of the Victor or any "live" broadcasts are known to exist.
