If my memory serves me correctly a number of years ago--four(?) there
were some rather severe and damaging fires in the cane fields. The
local press reported that huge ground fires had consumed hundreds of
acres of growth "native to the region". I think that perhaps the
damage to a year's crop--it comes back quickly enough--is starting to
show up in some of the reeds we are now consuming. It is food for thought-
