Re BASSES: Dear Karen: The relatively poverty-stricken transatlantic point of
view would be - buy the best you can afford and make the best of it. What sort
of noise it makes depends so much on the player, the mouthpiece and the reed
that generalizing about particular makes is not very useful. I'm not very
satisfied with the tone at the bottom of the clarinet register on my own cheapo
instrument, but I've heard full-price Selmers played by professionals which
hardly sounded any better.
