Subj: Bass clarinet advice

I have decided to buy a bass clarinet, and am looking for any advice on
where to look and what brands are best. Here's what my initial research
has found:

1. Yamaha basses have good keywork and tuning, but don't project well,
especially in the low register, so they're not recommended for orchestral
playing.

2. Selmers have tuning difficulties, but make a wonderful, rich sound
so are better for orchestral playing.

3. Right now, it is difficult to find a good new Selmer in North America.

I don't know any of this from experience; it's just what I've been told.
I would appreciate any comments and advice.

Thanks in advance.

Karen
