Dear Mr. Winick,

I was sorry to learn about your jaw pain. If it's any comfort,
you should know that you are not the first clarinetist to suffer this
distress. In the February-March 1989 issue of THE CLARINET, an article
entitled, "Are You A Victim of T.M.J. Dysfunction" (p.44),
clarinetist/author Susan Betz described symptoms similar to yours, which
eventually made her life a nightmare and caused her to give up playing
the clarinet.

I referred her article to a close personal friend who specializes
in TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) dysfunction and who developed original
corrective procedures for the malady. I've followed his career with
interest, and I've also read many of his professional papers. He has
taught these protocols internationally, and I believe specialists skilled
in this procedure are now resident in many major U.S. cities. He and Betz
corresponded by mail and also spoke on the phone.

While I don't pretend to have the competence to diagnose your
symptoms, I must admit they sound very similar to Ms. Betz's. I will
forward a copy of your E-mail message to my friend for his information.
I will be happy to to close the loop between the two of you if you should
so request.

Your discomfort must have grown to major proportions to cause you to
make this wide-range request for help. I believe such help is available,
and I hope you find relief soon.

Sincerely,

Conrad (Connie) Josias
