Jordan-
Read your request re: Rossi clarinets. I played on both the English and
French bore models at the Flagstaff ICS Conference in 1991. Both models were
beautifully constructed (choice of several kinds of hardwood with silver
keys- no middle tendon and no metal on barrel and bell).
If I had the dollars ($5,000 per pair in 1991), I would buy the English
bore hands down. Having played them every day of the conference as much as
Carlos would let me, I fell in love with them!
The sound was liquid and flexible, and the intonation was excellent
throughout all registers. Carlos used a slightly bored-out Charles Bay
mouthpiece, which felt perfect to me.
Rossi played a recital towards the end of the conference. What a gifted
player he is! His selections were entirely by South American composers (many
written for him), and all fine additions to the repertory. If anyone would
like a copy of his recital, I have the tape. Send me a blank C-90 and some
postage, and I'll gladly make a dupe. Carlos played in his English bore
instrument, with double embouchure. The sound was a little like the
Brymer/Kell school, but prettier (I love kell's playing, by the way!).
The price: $5,000 (1991). Delivery: about 6 months (again, 1991). He
usually runs a small ad in the Clarinet magazine.
