Original German edition titled "Die Klarinette - ihre Geschichte,
ihre Literature, ihre grossen Meister"[The Clarinet, Its history,
literature, and great players], published in 1965 by Barenreiter-
Verlag, Kassel.

English language version translated by Hilda Morris and edited by
Anthony Baines, was published under the title, "The Clarinet" (as
revised by Diethard Riehm who also added a repertory list) and published
by Taplinger Publishing Company, (29 E. 10th Street, NY 10003) in 1968.

In fact, Diethard Riehm revised the work on two occasions. First, he
made substantial contributions to the manuscript when Barenreither
first decided to publish the book. Ilse Kroll, Oskar's wife, mentions
that, because of the length of time between when the manuscript was
finished (ca. 1942) and Barenreiter was able to publish it, enough had
happened in the world to justify a revision even before publication.
Kroll, who did not return from the war, was obviously unable to make
the revision.

Second, Riehm also revised the work by adding the list of important
solo and chamber music works prior to the publication of the English
language edition. At this time, he was living in Munster/Westphalia
at the address Am Schlossgarten 34.

The book deals with the following topics:

1. Predecessors and Early Forms of the Clarinet
2. The Technical Development of the Clarinet
3. Compositions for the Clarinet
4. The Clarinet in the Orchestra
5. Study Works for the Clarinet
6. The Low Clarinets
7. The Saxophone
8. Short Biographies of some Eminent Clarinetists
9. Bibliography
10. Repertory of the Clarinet

Readers should be advised that Dr. Gerhard Kroll, a Salzburg Mozart
specialist with particular emphasis on the clarinet and its literature
during the late 18th century, bears the same last name as the book's
author and I have seem some people confusing the two men. I don't
know if they were related or not, but there were two German Krolls
in the world of the clarinet, one Oskar and one Gerhard.
