Rudolph was Beethoven's student, and really, Ron, the piece is very
charming, perhaps great, in a callow, boyish way, sort of like young love.
The problem is that the Trio is really a one shot effort. And as a one
shot effort, perhaps it is superior to Opus 11. (Oh, heresy!) I certainly
found it more fun to play than Opus 11. One does have to keep a straight
face around measure 40 -- Musica Rara does not number the score -- of the
first movement, when the cello pizzicato support of the clarinet line is
kitsch in a cuckoo clock way. The variations are more surprising that
those of Opus 11, but it seems that Beethoven himself didn't really care
for his own work there. There is a recording of the piece on CRD 3345 with
the Nash Ensemble (Anthony Pay on the clarinet).

Joel, if you had not gone to study in Seattle, you could have heard me
play the Rudolph, and the Ries (dull) and the Beethoven with Lars on the
cello and Climene on the piano here in Campinas. (-: (Nosso grupo de
camara se chamava Os Recalchutados. Ouviu falar de no's? (-: Lars, `as
vezes, cai'a no sono durante um recital e a Climene tem Teflon onde havia o
timpano do ouvido.) We also did the Mendelssohn you did with Montanha
(again heresy), and the Bruch pieces where the Clarinet called for is in B-
Flat. (The Cello takes the viola part.) I wanted to do the first movement
of the Zemlinsky or the Glinka or the d'Indy, or the reduction that Beethoven
did of his Opus 20, but my colleagues are still holding out for me to come
up with the cash to buy an instrument in A so that we can do the Brahms.
In the meantime . . .
