I developed a taste for these in about 1978. They seemed to have a high
percentage of usable reeds, but needed to be soaked longer than other brands.
I bought some a few years ago & didn't find them particularly appealing anymore.

The guy I bought my bari from likes to use those plastic dipped ones.
He doesn't sound any worse on those than on a std reed. I have difficulty
imagining that they'd be acceptable on a clarinet or alto, but I've never
tried them.

I always flatten the backs of my reeds with #600 paper -- maybe that wouldn't
be necessary with the plastic-coated reeds.

Highland pipes sometimes use plastic reeds (double-reed like an oboe).
I think they sound awful. Some people think bagpipes sound
better with no reeds. ;-)
