Someone asked last week about the best places to buy things
(sheet music, repair services, reeds, etc.) in the Bay Area.
Jordan gave some useful information in reply, and I agree
with everything he said, except that I feel the best place
to buy reeds is not in the Bay Area at all, but rather by
mail order (e.g. from Frederick Weiner or The Woodwind).
I had to buy a box of alto sax reeds locally in desperation
last month (OK, OK, I didn't plan ahead properly) and I paid
quite a bit more than I would have for mail order.

About buying instruments: I'm disappointed that no one has
come forth with an answer about how to try different models
of clarinets other than Buffet R13s and find the perfect one
without flying to a factory somewhere. Are clarinet conferences
the answer? Jim Lytthans recently told us about buying a
LeBlanc Opus at a convention; is that the way to go? (Of
course, that usually involves travel too. Clarinets are
more expensive than they seem!)
