I've had a recent experience that makes me feel that more flexible
ligatures are preferable. I had been using a Vandoren black ligature,
which is quite flexible and goes on easily, easy to adjust and sounds
good. I wanted another for another clarinet and tried to order from
the Woodwind. They were out of the black one, but had a chrome, which
I ordered, thinking the color is not all that critical. But, when it
came, I realized that the chrome one, although of the same style, was
much stiffer than the black and had the same difficulties putting on
and adjusting as other chrome ligatures I've had, including the Bonade.
So, I returned the Vandoren chrome and have since received 2 more Vandoren
black ligatures, which I as I've said are of much more flexible material
and are easier to use. I suspect that the act of chrome plating adds
thickness and stiffness to the metal.
